Junk removal is priced by how much room your stuff takes in the truck, not by weight or by hour. That single fact explains most of the confusion. Crews quote in fractions of a truckload, which is why a phone estimate is always provisional and why the number can move when they see the pile.
Photos get you an accurate number. Send pictures of the actual pile, the room, or the garage when you request a quote. Most companies will give you a much tighter estimate from photos than from a description, and it protects you from the on-site adjustment that homeowners find frustrating.
Expect exclusions. Paint, chemicals, oil, asbestos, and some electronics or appliances with refrigerant are commonly refused or surcharged, because disposal is regulated. Ask up front rather than discovering it while the truck is loaded.

A roll-off dumpster rental is usually the better economics for a renovation, a roof tear-off, or a multi-day cleanout where you are filling it gradually - just confirm the weight limit and the prohibited items, because that is where surprise fees come from.
